The German Vocational Training System
Germany’s dual system of vocational education and training is highly recognized worldwide due to its combination of theory in the classroom and training in a real-life work environment. There are approximately 324 state-recognized vocational specializations in various industries such as industry, hospitality, nursing, and elderly care. The training usually lasts between one and a half to three years.
During the training, the student spends about one to two days per week in a rehabilitation facility for theoretical studies and the remaining days in a facility or factory to gain practical experience. After passing the final exam, the graduate can work professionally with the acquired qualifications. During the training, the student receives a monthly salary from the institution offering the training. This salary increases annually and varies depending on the specialization.
During the minimum two-year training period, the student can work up to 20 hours per week to improve their standard of living.
